Fluency and coherence: what actually moves you to band 7
Examiners are not counting ums. They are listening for whether you can keep going and whether your ideas are in an order a stranger can follow.

Fluency and coherence is the criterion people misunderstand most. It is not speed. A calm band-8 speaker can be slower than a rushed band-6. It is continuity and shape.
Continuity
Can you keep the turn without long gaps, without restarting the same sentence three times, and without asking the examiner to repeat every question? Light hesitation is fine. Freezing while you rebuild the grammar is not.
Shape
Link ideas with because, so, although, for example, on the other hand. You do not need fancy discourse markers in every line. You need the listener to know why the next sentence is there.
- Weak: “I like my city. It is big. There are malls. Traffic is bad.”
- Stronger: “I like my city because everything is close, although the traffic in the evening can be exhausting.”
Self-correction is allowed — once
Fixing a tense and moving on shows control. Repairing the same clause twice shows you do not trust the sentence. Say it, fix it if you must, continue.
How to practise
Record a Part 3 answer and listen only for stops. Each stop longer than a breath is a place to plant a filler that buys time: “the main reason is…”, “what I noticed is…”. Then sit another full mock and check whether the gaps shrank.
